Today in the Word for November 25-29

Today in The Word

Monday Nov 25, 2019

Welcome to The Word with Pastor David. Genuine hope cannot be manufactured by humans, but it can be nurtured and grown in us. How can we grow hope? Romans 15:4 reads:

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”

Paul is saying that hope can be grown through endurance. How does that work? When we are in difficulty, and we trust in the Lord and see it through we are changed. We begin to build a resume of trusting in God. We begin to see that God cares about us and is committed to helping us in the midst of difficulty. Instead of giving up and quitting in trial, we see it through. And the more we endure, the easier it is to hope in God in the next difficulty. We defeat the tendency to throw up our hands in despair. We hope in God. Endurance grows hope until it is a natural part of our life regardless of circumstance.

We trust God. We hope in him.

Welcome to The Word with Pastor David. Genuine hope cannot be manufactured by humans, but it can be nurtured and grown in us. How can we grow hope? Romans 15:13 reads:

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Paul says we can overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. God’s Spirit in our lives can be brimful of hope. It might even splash onto others!  Zechariah 4:6 reads:

“…Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.”

When we stop trying to manufacture our own hope by our might or power and start believing that it is God’s Spirit in us that will see us through, a change takes place in our outlook. We hope in his power and character rather than our own. And that character and power are not at a distance. If we have begun a relationship with Jesus, God’s Holy Spirit lives inside us. We stop depending solely on our abilities and start depending firstly on the Spirit’s abilities in us.

And that leads to an overflow of hope.
