 Christians talk about the Trinity. What is the Trinity and is that really how God is? Welcome to The Word with Pastor David. One place in scripture that is easy to see the Trinity is I Corinthians 12:4-6. Paul says:

 “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.”

 In these verses we hear Paul reference the Holy Spirit, the Lord (our Lord Jesus Christ), and God (or The Father). As he speaks about gifts, service and working, he talks about the involvement of God in the persons of the Holy Spirit, Jesus and the Father. This is similar to some of Jesus’ last words to his disciples in Matthew 28:19:

 “…make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”

 God is a perfect community of three persons who are unlike any other beings in the universe. And although they understand and relate to each other completely, they are not identical to each other. The Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are distinct. Otherwise it would make no sense to have Jesus baptized in the Jordan River, the Holy Spirit descend on him in the form of a dove, and God the Father speak to those present from the sky (Matthew 3:16-17).

 So, that is just a little bit about the great doctrine of the Trinity as found in The Word…from Pastor David of Deer Lodge Assembly on the corner of 5th and Montana.

What is one of the roles of a member of the Trinity—the Holy Spirit? Welcome to the Word with Pastor David. I Corinthians 12:4 reads:

 “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.”

  In both I Corinthians 12 and Romans 12 there are lists of these gifts and then I Corinthians 12: 11 reads:

 “All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.” 

The Holy Spirit is the distributor, or dispenser of spiritual gifts, such as healing, faith, encouragement, and mercy. We do not earn these gifts. They are given by God. In fact, the Holy Spirit is the one who gets to decide who receives the gifts. They are given at his determination.

 This helps us to not fall to pride in the employ of spiritual gifts. They are not really ours and we did not earn them in the first place. They are gifts of the Holy Spirit we have been loaned for a season. Spiritual gifts are one of the Holy Sprit’s roles in God’s work with humankind.

 Do you feel as if it is sometimes hard to serve others? Welcome to The Word with Pastor David.

 What is one of the roles of one of the persons of the Trinity, Jesus? Welcome to The Word with Pastor David. One place in scripture that describes a role of Jesus is I Corinthians 12:4 where Paul says:

 “There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.”

 Lord is a reference to Jesus, but what does Paul mean? He explains further in Colossians 3:23-24:

 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

 Serving is really not about our human bosses. It is about service to others as if we were serving Jesus himself. A role of Jesus on this planet was to demonstrate to us how to serve. That is why he washed his disciples’ feet when no one else would humble themselves to the task. And it is Jesus who states in Luke 22:27:

 “…I am among you as one who serves.”

 One of Jesus’ roles is to model for us how to serve so that we can serve others as if we were serving Jesus.

 Welcome to The Word with Pastor David. This week we have learned about some of the different roles of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is a distributor of gifts, and Jesus is a model of service. Today we look at the Father. I Corinthians 12:6 reads:

 “There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.”

 What is the relationship between God and our work? Ephesians 3:20 describes the Father:

 “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us”

 One of the Father’s roles is to work through us. Our best efforts will not be enough for many of the problems in the world, but this passage states boldly that God’s power can work through us in ways beyond our imagination. If we will work in his strength, our work can be effective and can make a difference in the world. The Father has a role of empowerment of his children. Each person in the Trinity of God has distinct roles because they are distinct from each other, even though they are one in purpose.
