Today in The Word

Tuesday Feb 4, 2020

Did you sleep with a night-light in your room when you were small? Welcome to The Word with Pastor David. Fear of the dark is common to lots of the human race. King David writes in Psalm 27:1:

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear...”

Job explains what God as our light signifies in Job 29:2-3:

“…when God watched over me, when his lamp shone on my head and by his light I walked through darkness!”

There are many dangers in the dark. After all, Satan is the Prince of Darkness. Yet, the Lord can be our ‘head lamp’ in the dark. A moonless Montana night far from town can be inky black, yet one headlamp can make a profound difference. The Lord does not promise no dark nights, but he can be the light that accompanies us through every dark night.

We do not need to fear the dark. The Lord is our light and salvation.

Do you have a place to retreat to when things get difficult? Welcome to The Word with Pastor David. David described his in Psalm 27:1 and 5:

“…The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid...For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling: he will…set me high upon a rock.”

David knew quite a bit about trouble. He spent a fair bit of his young adulthood running from a murderous, half-crazy king. David had good reason to be afraid of King Saul. Yet he did not place his security in a hideout somewhere, but rather a hideout in someone. God was his unassailable fortress. He trusted God to be his Rock of protection in a dangerous world.

How about you and I? Is our world dangerous at times? God is the someone we can run to for safety. God can be the stronghold of our life.

Do we fear what some people say? Welcome to The Word with Pastor David. Words can really cut deep. And in this digital age, it seems the internet is getting ever more vicious in how people speak to each other. David states in Psalm 27:11-12:

“Teach me your way, Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations.”

David knew something about slander and vicious words. And we read here that he appeals to the Lord to be led in a straight path. When we fear the words of others, we can make different mistakes. We can strike back with harsh words of our own. We can believe the terrible things others tell us. We can withdraw from all social interaction.

Yet like a soldier following single file behind a mine sweeper, the Lord can guide us in a straight path. Follow the Lord and you can negotiate the world of nasty words without fear.

And that is the Word from Deer Lodge Assembly on the corner of 5th and Montana.

Does it seem like the bad guys outnumber the good guys in your life? Welcome to The Word with Pastor David. It is a universal fear to be outnumbered. In Psalm 27:2-4 David states:

“When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear, though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life…”

David was constantly outnumbered by King Saul’s army with a price on his head. Yet he did not live in fear of the many. How did he do that? He sought the “One”. He understood that he and God were enough in any situation. Regardless of the ‘human’ numbers, if his trust was in the Lord, he and God were a majority.

Don’t worry about ‘The Many.’ Just seek ‘The One.’ He is enough.

And that’s the Word.  You can enjoy more of the Word this Sunday at 10:45 at Deer Lodge Assembly on the corner of 5th and Montana.
